Training: Advanced operations

In Canada, there are 2 categories of drone operations: basic and advanced. Each is governed by a set of rules that must be respected.

The aim of the “Advanced Operations” course is to teach you the basics of flying UAVs weighing over 250 grams in controlled airspace, while complying with current regulations.

The weight of your drone, distance from passers-by and airspace rules define your category. The rules do not distinguish between drone pilots for recreational purposes and drone pilots for commercial purposes.

If you meet 1 of the following conditions, you can perform advanced operations:

• You want to fly your drone in controlled airspace;
• Would you like to fly your drone over passers-by?
• You wish to fly your drone within a horizontal distance of passers-by of less than 30 m (100 ft);
• You want to fly within 3 nautical miles of a certified airport or military airfield;
• You want to fly within one nautical mile of a certified heliport.
